Wroughton Junior School

English Writing

Our curriculum intent , implementation and impact

At Wroughton Junior school, we believe that writing is an essential skill, and therefore, plays an integral part in our children’s learning and our curriculum.  We aim to develop articulate and imaginative communicators who can confidently express their knowledge, ideas and emotions through spoken and written word. As they develop as communicators, they will also build an appreciation and understanding of how others communicate with them.  In our writing curriculum, we understand the importance of spoken language that underpins the development of writing, as well as developing transcription skills (handwriting and spelling) to support children in the composition of their writing.

Talk for Writing

Talk for Writing is a powerful and proven approach to teaching writing in schools. This approach enables children to read and write independently as it moves through three key stages. A key feature is that children internalise the language structures needed to write through ‘talking the text’, as well as close reading. The approach moves from dependence towards independence, with the teacher using shared and guided teaching to develop the ability in children to write creatively and powerfully.

Each year group follows a progression of knowledge and skills built upon the national curriculum to build confident and imaginative writers.  Click here for our progression of knowledge and skills.

Spelling

Rising Star Spellings

Our spelling lessons are taught using the Rising Stars spelling programme. This programme is based upon the National Curriculum and teaches a range of spelling rules alongside the statutory 100 words for each year group. The spelling programme follows a weekly cycle of an introductory exploration, followed by opportunities to teach, practise, apply and review any spelling rules the children encounter.
