Wroughton Junior School

Wroughton Outside Lunchtime Fun (WOLF)

What is Wroughton Outside Lunchtime Fun (WOLF)?

Wroughton Outside Lunchtime Fun has come around from pupil voice. Our children shared that they wanted more options at lunchtime and to use our amazing grounds throughout the year.

To give our children the best opportunity and experiences of play we have utilised the whole of the school site using the playgrounds, field and tree area all year round and in all weathers.

The school’s grounds have been zoned into 8 areas where different activities and options for play will take place. All zones will be supervised by an adult. Children will have scooters, den building, small world, garden games, disco, dress up, general play, gardening and much more.

We aim for children to build cross year relationships based on different interests and demonstrate our school rules and values at lunchtime.

Why is play important?

Play is any freely chosen activity which a child finds satisfying and creative. It may or may not involve equipment or other people. It may be serious or light hearted. It may produce something or it may be done simply for its own sake. It allows children an opportunity to be creative and make decisions. Here at Wroughton Juniors we recognise that play may need to make a noise, get dirty, make a mess and sometimes be out of the direct gaze of adults. We believe the role of the adults is to support the play process. Children will also have the opportunity for ‘free range’ play within the school grounds.

Through our belief in children’s rights, our aims are as follows:

  • Provide a secure, caring environment where all children are happy, intrinsically motivated, relaxed and able to reach their potential.
  • Children must follow instructions, use equipment without hurting others and have fun.
  • Adults respect this right by providing opportunities for creative, exciting play, use conflict resolution to support children and supporting children who have additional needs at playtime.
  • Children have the right to assess risk
  • Adults respect this right by assessing risk daily, encouraging children to assess risk
  • Adults respect this right by developing new opportunities for play, listening to children’s ideas about play and supporting children who have additional needs to access play.
  • Learn how to respect equipment through tidying away.

We launched Wroughton Outside Lunchtime Fun on Tuesday 24th September. Take a look here to see a snapshot from the day.

WOLF October Update

WOLF November Update

We will continue to share updates with families and the wider community as we expand our WOLF provision.

What do our children and staff think?

We have the freedom to play how and where we want to!

I like that we can be creative and build things.

WOLF has had an enormously positive impact on the experience of our school for children. You can see positive relationships forming between year groups, problem solving skills and communication skills have also improved.

It has been brilliant and fantastic to see children being able to be ‘children’ and make full use of the all the amazing space we have at our school.
