Supporting Learning at Home
Reading
Reading Journals
Reading is vital to a child's success across the whole curriculum, not just English. At home, it is important to continue to develop the love for reading and build their reading fluency. We recommend reading at regularly as well as some time with an adult for informal book talk.
The reading journal helps children to engage with their reading on a personal level and can help to direct an informal conversation with your child about their reading. To find out about the reading journals, and how you can fill them in, please click on the pictures below for a presentation. The presentation includes some fantastic examples from our children.
Reading Scheme Books
As well as children having a independent reading choice from our fantastic library, they may also have a scheme book to read. This book will be matched to their reading level and it is designed to build confidence in fluency and comprehension.

Barrington Stoke Books
In our library, you will find a wide range of Barrington Stoke books which are aimed at making reading accessible for all, especially those with dyslexia. Anyone can choose these books from our library. If you want to know more, please speak to your class teacher.

Reading Recommendations
Click on the links below for recommendations of the top 50 recommend reads for the age group. These are updated regularly with new releases.
These reading roads are set by genre of books such as animals or mystery books. As you move through the road the books become more challenging.
Sometimes we get stuck on one author! Its easily done when they write such good books. These posters can help you to branch out to other similar authors.

Spellings
Here you will find the spelling rules the children will learn in Year 3. Spelling word lists will be sent home that reflect the rules learnt each term. It is best for children to focus on applying the rule to a range of words as well as those on the list. You will also find some activities that you can use at home to help with learning spellings.
As well as the spelling rules there are common exception words that will be taught in school but can also be practised at home. These word lists can be found below.

Maths
Key number fact rehearsal and learning
Developing number facts is key to success for our mathmeticians! As the curriculum progress and becomes more complex, children need to be able to recall these facts quickly and accurately so that they are able to engage in new learning.
Short, regular practice of the key number facts at home will be crucial to the children becoming more fluent in their mathematical learning. We advise the use of the White Rose 1-Minute Maths app. In the document below, you can see the different activities we would recommend for you to use. Just 5-minutes a day will help to embed these number facts and support further progress in maths.
Here are links to the apps or websites that can be used to support develop these number facts further at home.
Times Table Booklets
These booklets are available for you to download and use at home. They are best used as a way to rehearse your times table facts rather than as a test. When children do not know a fact, encourage them to use strategies taught in school to work this out or let them use the front cover to remind them.
